The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo came from humble beginnings with a simple mission. “A volunteer organization that emphasizes agriculture and education to develop the youth of Texas.” The mission not only frames its identity, but also reflects its heritage.

Most people know about the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo for their 18-day annual event full of non-stop rodeo action and entertainment. Not to mention all of the thrills at the premiere carnival, that tasty fair food, and shopping for the latest western fashion and decor. True to its tagline of “More Than An 8 Second Ride”, the 501 c3 nonprofit organization does so much more. Everything the Rodeo does comes back to raising funds to support Texas youth.

The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo began as a junior livestock show in 1949 and held its first rodeo the following year. The organization began awarding 15 four-year scholarships totaling $90,000 to students entering Texas colleges in fall 1984. As the Rodeo grew exponentially, so did the number of competitive events and its educational commitment. In 2020 alone, more than 21, 275 Texas youth were educationally impacted and $12.2 million was committed. Since inception, over $223 million has been generated to fulfill the Rodeo mission.

Who helps drive the mission year-round? There are roughly thirty-one dedicated full-time staff members and over 6000 hardworking volunteers that selflessly give their time and talents to make it happen. You can’t miss their Texas hospitality to ensure your rodeo experience is remarkable. These volunteers serve on approximately 45 committees that help with nearly every aspect of the event as well as host fundraisers throughout the year.

As the Rodeo kicks off Thursday, February 11, you will experience a retro feel as the action-packed rodeo and entertainment will take place in the Freeman Coliseum (home to the rodeo for over 50 years) in order to comply with current health and safety guidelines. The Junior Livestock Show will continue to host exhibitors from throughout the state to compete in agriculture events that help achieve the Rodeo mission. In addition, all of the exhilarating rides and games plus those delicious funnel cakes and more will be available at the carnival.

When you head to the Rodeo year after year, just remember that everything you do helps them raise funds for future generations and that you are truly making a significant impact. For information on tickets and more, visit sarodeo.com and Let’s Rodeo San Antonio!
